Best time to visit

Evening visits (from 7 PM) offer the full live music experience with a paying crowd. Lunchtimes are quieter if you want to explore the memorabilia without the shoulder-to-shoulder atmosphere.

Budget tips

Free entry during daytime hours until around 4 PM, then a small cover charge (around £5) applies for evening live music sets. No Liverpool Pass or city card discounts, but daytime visits cost nothing.

About

Quick facts: The 10,000 bricks used to build the club were salvaged from a collapsed 18th century building in Liverpool. The Beatles played here 292 times between 1961 and 1963, with their first lunchtime gig drawing just 18 people.

Highlights: The original brick archway at the entrance still bears the scratch marks from music fans' belt buckles in the 1960s, worn down over years of queueing. Downstairs, the cramped stage area retains its low ceiling and tight dimensions, forcing musicians into the same 1.2 meter height as the Beatles performed under.

Insider tips

  • Arrive by 6:30 PM on weeknights to grab a spot near the stage before the crowd packs in.
  • Skip the gift shop upstairs and head straight to the live music cellar where the real atmosphere lives.
  • Check the club's online schedule beforehand: some evenings feature tribute acts while others showcase emerging local talent.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes as the floor gets sticky and crowded during peak hours.
